Peak Season: 1 October - 1 March

1 October - 1 November:

As the water begins to warm and strong persistent South-Easterly winds appear, fishing activity of ocean predators increases. Bronzies follow their migratory pattern to more temperate waters of the Western Cape, and we start to see the first signs of bronzies in the False Bay areas. Blackrays and smaller ray species also start to make more of an appearance.

1 November - 1 February:

This is where we see the greatest fish activity. Bronze Whaler Sharks, Raggies, Blackrays and Duck Bill rays, and other species of fish are in full effect. Some of the most productive days and prize fish are caught during this time.

1 February - 1 April:

As the season heads into Autumn, the water temperature decreases and the strong persistent south-easters fade away. The fish numbers are starting to decline. Quality fish are still up for grabs, however far less frequent. The bronzies follow their migratory pattern up the coast to warmer waters in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal area in chase of the annual sardine run.

Off Peak: 1 April - 1 October:

This period is the slowest time for the predator species. Species like the cow shark who prefer colder waters are more common during this time.

Location: Cape Town (False Bay)

Areas we fish: Strand, Simon’s Town, Macassar

The False Bay coastline, stretching roughly 72 kilometres from Cape Point in the west to Hangklip in the east, offers a dynamic and varied fishing environment. Its wide arc ensures that there is almost always a fishable area, as wind and ocean conditions differ across the bay. We focus primarily on Simon’s Town, Strand, and Macassar, each with its own distinctive characteristics and species.

Simon’s Town

Simon’s Town features a rocky shoreline with deep water access close to shore. The presence of scattered reefs and kelp forests create a rich habitat for baitfish, which in turn attract larger predators. Anglers here often encounter pelagic species such as yellowtail and tuna, with a few anglers successfully catching yellowtail off the rocks. Simon’s Town is home to a multitude of shark and ray species including South Africa’s largest and heaviest stingray, the black ray or “Pylie”, as well as bronzies in the summertime.

Macassar

Macassar offers a sandy stretch of coastline where the Eerste River meets the ocean. Wide beaches and shifting sandbanks provide ideal conditions for large Kob and elusive steenbras. During the summer months, bronze whaler sharks patrol this area in search of baitfish, including the occasional big ragged tooth shark. This makes it a hotspot for both predator and edible fishing. On weekends, the shoreline is often lined with vehicles as anglers take advantage of the productive summer season.

Strand

Strand combines long sandy beaches with extensive scattered reef systems. This unique setting allows anglers to fish reefs up to 200 metres offshore, sometimes even swimming out to reach the chosen spots. The area supports rich and diverse marine life, offering a wide variety of edible and non-edible species like silver Kob, Garrick, Bronze whaler sharks, Spotted Gulley sharks and Duck bill rays. This makes it one of the most versatile and rewarding stretches that False Bay has to offer.
